Tiong: Reduce use of plastic bags

Datuk Tiong Thai King

SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) chairman Datuk Tiong Thai King calls for a change of mindset among the people here in order to reduce the use of plastic bags.

He said in many foreign countries, no plastic bags were provided.

“Shoppers bring along their own bags. I think this is a good environmental practice.

“Non bio-degradable plastic bags take a long time to decompose. They pollute the environment including rivers and oceans besides blocking drains.

“They also cause dirty water to come out into the street, making puddles that are breeding grounds for flies and mosquitoes,” he said.

Tiong told reporters this after officiating at the Chinese New Year Price Control Scheme 2018 at Sing Kwong Supermarket in Salim yesterday.

“This is a question of mindset and I urge the public to bring their own bags when shopping instead of asking for plastic bags. We all have a shared responsibility to preserve and conserve the environment,” he said.

The Dudong assemblyman went on to say that the council had regularly encouraged major retail outlets here not to provide shoppers with plastic bags.
