SIBU: Newly-appointed district police chief ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit says gambling activities at cyber cafes here have been wiped out over the past two years.

He said although police have wiped out such activities, they are now focusing on combating   online gambling via handheld devices and personal computers.

“It is a tough war, but the police are keeping a close watch. We are determined.

“It’s tougher this time because gamblers can commit the crime anywhere and anytime, even when they are in their office. All they need to do is switch on their computer, and they would be playing,” he told reporters at his office here yesterday.

He admitted it was nearly impossible to go after those behind online gambling as their servers are often located overseas.

On a separate matter, Stanley advised those celebrating Chinese New Year to work with the police to prevent untoward incidents from marring their celebration.

“Do not let newspapers lie around in the house compound if you are spending the festival outside the town. Switch on the lights in the house to keep the thieves out.”

He also advised those celebrating the festival elsewhere not to leave valuables at home during their absence.

“It is wise that many home owners have installed CCTV and alarm systems.”

Stanley also advised the people against excessive drinking, saying it could spark road accidents, fights or even violent crimes.

“It only takes one glass too many for these things to happen,” he said.
